A grand Soviet plan for developing the modern city of Novopolotsk included wide thoroughfares with trams running on a segregated median, with impressive (but useless from traffic flow point of view) bi-level interchanges.

At the time of this photo the entire fleet consisted of KTM-5M3 cars. Most of these cars were more than 30 years old, delivered in 1973. The pictured car is an exception, however – it is one of five newer cars, delivered in 1986 (two additional cars were delivered in 1992).

A proximity of the chemical processing combine is not readily revealed due to excess greenery in most places along the line within the indsutrial park. At the time of this photo most of the fleet consisted of KTM-5M3 cars. The majority of these cars were 35 years old, delivered in 1973. The pictured car is an exception, however – it is one of five newer cars, delivered in 1986 (two additional cars were delivered in 1992).

As new Belarus-made BKM 60102 trams began to appear from 2004 on, the storage yard with excess trams began to grow. Note that 038 is actually a newer car, delivered in 1986.

Zavodskoy Proezd / Molodezhnaya Ul.

The original plan of tramway development called for an intercity semi-light-rail line between the “new” city of Novopolotsk, and the “old” city of Polotsk, located 6 km to the northeast of the former. This entailed a crossing of the Zapadnaya Dvina River, a task that was never realized. The city infrastructure, however, in some places was built with the future tram extensions in mind.
