Between 08.2011 - 31.03.2009 trolleybuses operated via a temporary circular route, confined to the northern part of the network. As the depot was located in the southern part of the network, trolleybuses were stored in the streets, and were towed to/from the depot for maintenance. In this photo trolleybuses are stranded in the snow storm.

Between 08.2011 - 31.03.2009 trolleybuses operated via a temporary circular route, confined to the northern part of the network, with the temporary Route 1 following the clockwise pattern, and the new temporary Route 22 following the counterclockwise pattern. Renumbering of Route 2 into 22 was due to a temporary diesel bus Route 2 operated in place of trolleybuses. A strange choice of numbering was due to route displays with digits “1” and “2” been the only ones available, thus two placards with the number “2” were put together to form “22”.

Kachitsa

The trolleybus network was closed on 31.03.2009. The official pretext was a road construction project in the Kachitsa area, which involved a revamping of the trans-Bulgarian Sofia - Varnovo highway interchange into two traffic circles. At the time of this photo, two years after systems' closure, this was the only segment of the former trolleybus network overhead that was missing.

A trolleybus line traverses a mountain pass and descents into a valley south of the city, toward the industrial park. As per smart urban planning scheme that utilized local terrain peculiarities, residential and industrial areas are located in valleys separated by a mountain chain. The original purpose of the trolleybus network was to provide a connection between the two valleys.
