2-01. The Avtovokzal Terminal, Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr.-Service Road / Sofyi Kovalevskoy Ul.
ZiU-VMZ-100 21. Line 3.
The official Terminal Stop and the layover area were located in the alley behind the Avtovokzal (the Bus Station) building. Trolleybuses turned around by way of looping around the Avtovokzal grounds.

2-02. Dachnaya Ul. / Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr.
ZiU-VMZ-100 21. Line 3, KhBK-bound.
Trolleybus returns to the main road via Dachnaya Ul. upon completing a layover behind the Avtovokzal building. At the time of this photo, four years prior to the trolleybus' system closure, only two remaining services were operated. Line 1 was operated with 4 trolleybuses on the +/-15 min headway; Line 3 was operated with 6 trolleybuses on the +/-10 min headway. Both services operated with exemplary punctuality.

2-03a. Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. at Avtovokzal.
ZiU-VMZ-100 43. Line 3, KhBK-bound.
Trolleybus completes the same loop about a month prior to the systems' closure. The Avtovokzal building is in the background. Photos dated 11 Oct 2007 in this report are the last known photographs of Shakhty trolleybuses in operation.

2-03b. Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr., the Avtovokzal Stop.
ZiU-VMZ-100 23. Line 3, KhBK-bound.
Trolleybus at the passenger pick up stop in-front of the Avtovokzal. As of the date of this photo, the system still had two more years to go. There was one remaining service, Line 3, which operated with 5 trolleybuses on the +/-12 min headway between 7:30-21:00.
(15 Jul 2005, Denis Artamonov)
2-04. Karla Marksa Pr. / Sadovaya Ul.
ZiU-VMZ-100 16. Line 1, Avtovokzal-bound.
When the city's very first trolleybus line opened on 30.09.1975, it followed somewhat secondary Sadovaya Ul. and Krala Marksa Pr., while the central-most south-north thoroughfare Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. was still served by trams. The situation was soon 'corrected' in 05.1976, but the trolleybus stop at this particular intersection, even though away from city's focal center, was called Tsentr ('Center') ever since. This was also the official Terminal for circular Line 4 and the short-lived Line 8 (1989-1990). Each of these two services looped around the city center area following both clockwise and counterclockwise patterns.

2-05. Karla Marksa Pr. / Sovetskaya Ul.
ZiU-682G 30T. Line 1, Avtovokzal-bound.
Most of Karla Marksa Pr. is a charming boulevard, which however, runs at the periphery of the city center. It was mainly served by trolleybus Lines 1 and 4, and very briefly by Lines 2 (1975-1976) and 8 (1989-1990). Line 1 was among the two remaining trolleybus services left after the system's downsizing in 11.1997. The Karla Marksa Pr. Line was always less popular than the main Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. Line four blocks to the east. The former line subsequently closed in favor of the latter in 2004. This photo is made at the junction with the main tramway line at Sovetskaya Ul.
(10 Sep 1996, Aare Olander)
2-06. Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. / Sovetskaya Ul.
ZiU-VMZ-100 10. Line 3, KhBK-bound.
Trolleybus crosses the city's main intersection adjacent to Lenina Square. This was also the major tram and trolleybus junction, as the core tramway line via Sovetskaya Ul. intersected here with the key trolleybus line via Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. This photo, however, was made almost two years after the closure of the tram system. The tracks are already paved over, so there is now no sign of trams ever running here.

2-07. Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. / Ionova Ul.
ZiU-VMZ-100 10. Line 3, KhBK-bound.
Trolleybus loops around the square at the northern part of Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. The former semi-interurban suburban trolleybus line to the satellite town of Artyom used to divert to the viewer's left, onto Ionova Ul. This direct trolleybus connection to Artyom (as opposed to the first indirect line through KhBK) was opened on 31.08.1986 and lasted until 11.1997, when more than half of the trolleybus network was closed, including the entire suburban section.

2-08. Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. / Volodarskogo Ul.
ZiU-VMZ-100 21. Line 3, Avtovokzal-bound.
While the south-north corridor was given over to trolleybuses, trams traditionally served the west-east corridor in the city. The only south-north tram connection was the line to Shakhta 'Proletarskoy Diktatury', or Pos. Zvyozdniy. This tramline, however, was sacrificed in favor of trolleybuses in 1976. In this photo a trolleybus is pictured at the north end of Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr., where trams once ran. The Shakhta 'Proletarskoy Diktatury' Tram Terminal was located up the hill, at the end of the street. The Pos. Zvyozdniy Trolleybus Loop was built instead of the tramway loop in 1976. It was briefly used by the first version of Line 3 in late 1976, and by Line 6 between 1983-1986.

2-09. Zvyozdnaya Ul. / Karla Marksa Pr.
ZiU-VMZ-100 26. Line 3, KhBK-bound.
The Zvyozdnaya Ul. connection between Karla Marksa Pr. and Pos. Zvyozdniy opened at the end of 1976, effectively forming a loop around the city's central-most area comprised of the Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. Line and Karla Marksa Pr. Line. At the time of this photo, however, only the Pobedy Revolyutsii Pr. service (Line 3) remained in operation.

Trolleybuses meet at the railroad crossing near the Depot. This photo is made at the time when both Line 1 and 3 were still in operation. The Depot's tram access line is visible in the back, also crossing the railroad track. This is the only spot in the city where trams and trolleybuses ever ran side-by-side.

Another trolleybus passes through the same location and heads in the opposing direction a month prior to system's closure. During final years of service all operable vehicles remained in a relatively good state of repair and a fair cosmetic state.

Prior to system's closure the overhead was in a hopeless state of disrepair as the maintenance was virtually non-existent.

The abbreviation KhBK actually belongs to the adjacent factory, which name has somehow spread to the residential neighborhood nearby.

ZiU-VMZ-100 16. Line 1.
As of the date of this photo, this is the northernmost end of the trolleybus line. Prior to 11.1997 the line used to extend beyond KhBK, to the satellite town of Artyom. Another line, a one-way loop encircling the KhBK neighborhood, began here and followed Voroshilova Ul. in the background of this photo. It was served by a local neighborhood circular Line 5 from the early 1980s until 1983, and by the KhBK - Artyom Line 2 from 1983 until 11.1997.

2-16. Voroshilova Ul.
The Shakhty trolleybus system was famous for two long semi-interurban lines to the satellite town of Artyom. The first line to Artyom, served by Line 2, opened in segments between 1975 and 1983. It followed the indirect and rather curvilinear route through the KhBK. Here is the site of the former trolleybus stop at the beginning of the KhBK - Artyom line as it leaves the KhBK neighborhood.

Ever since the merger of bus and trolleybuses undertakings into one enterprise, the Trolleybus Depot is more likely to house diesel buses, midibuses and minibuses, rather than anything electric.

All ZIU-VMZ-100 vehicles that remained on the property during last years of operation were a product of the last rolling stock upgrade that took place in 2000. These were refurbished ZiU-682V and ZiU-682G vehicles with VMZ-100 bodies manufactured in Vologda.
