The Winzerla Loop was installed in 1969. The old 1935-1967 version of the line to Lobeda used to continue south beyond the current loop. It curved eastward to Lobeda some 250 m. down the road. This photo was taken just after the collapse of the DDR.

The old line was closed due to the construction of the new highway that cut across it.

The new high speed tram line to Lobeda was opened in 2 stages in 1996 and 1997. It was essentially the postponed old DDR-era project finally realized. Prior to opening of the tram line, Lobeda residents were served by an interim army of articulated Ikarus buses.

Line 3 is a short low-ridership shuttle-like service that operates between the outer terminals of Winzerla, Lobeda-West and Lobeda-Ost. It was served with single Gotha cars throughout the last years of operation of 2-axle trams in Jena. The last Gotha car ran on this line on 09.07.2003, which was thought to be the last day of operation of these trams in Jena (they breifley re-appeared on Line 2 later, in 2004).

Line 4 is the main service that connects Lobeda-West and the city center. It is served exclusively with low-floor trams. Line 3 serves both Lobeda-West and Lobeda-Ost branches by way of each run stopping over and changing ends at Lobeda-West while en-route between Winzerla and Lobeda-Ost.

A single car is changing ends at the stub-end. The new extension to Bahnhof Goschwitz is to be opened in mid-2009. It will later be extended to Burgau, and will become the new access line to Lobeda via Goschwitz allowing a one-shot through service from the city center to both Lobeda-West and Lobeda-Ost.

Reko TZ70/1 motor cars were seldom used toward the end of the era of 2-axle cars in Jena - one of the last serviceable cars of this type is pictured here at the old Depot. Trailers of Reko BZ70/1 type, however, did survive to the end.

Up until 1997 there was only one tram Depot in the city - the small Darnburger Strasse Depot. A car storage yard was erected near by to cope with cars that wouldn’t fit at the Depot.
