Tram line 87 acts as a feeder to the S-bahn - the Rahnsdorf S-bahn Station is visible in the background in this photo. Both terminals of the line are simple stub ends with passing points.

Trailers were used in regular passenger service prior to 2006. Motor+trailer trains changed ends at the Rahnsdorf Teminal by way of a motor car by-passing its trailer via the adjacent track. In this photo a trailer awaits for its lead motor car to change ends.

An interior of the motor car. As of the date of this photo all Gotha motor cars were overhauled and modernized (see letter 'M' for model identification), yet most features of the interior were preserved. Trailers were never modernized.

Berliner Wald
Gotha T57M
The 2,2 km. long western section of the line between Rahndsdorf and Schonblick traverses through the virgin Berlin Wald (Berlin Forest). A passing point is located at the 2,1 km. mark, used during rush hours under the post-2006 service arrangement, when 3 single cars are operated on the line.

Goethestrasse

Upon passing through the Berlin Forest, trams enter the suburban community of Schonblick. Here the line follows the segregated alignment via the northern curb of Berliner Strasse.

Berliner Platz

The Berliner Platz Stop is located at the borderline between Schonblick and Woltersdorf, at the 3,2 km. mark. This is a mid-point of the line in terms of running time. The passing point was inserted here in the summer of 2006. This allowed for the introduction of the new service arrangement that involved 3 single motor cars operating on weekdays instead of 2 motor cars and 1 shared trailer.

Berliner Platz

Since 2006 until the date of this photo 2 single motor cars operated most of the times on the 20 min headway. Trams met at the Berliner Platz passing point. The 3rd car operated between Rahnsdorf and Berliner Platz during rush hours, which reduced the headway on that section to 10 min.

Fasanenstrasse

In Woltersdorf the line follows the northern curb of Berliner Strasse on a mixed right-of-way. Thus, outbound trams conflict with motorized traffic head-on. Cars moving in the same direction as tram are to stop and give way to opposing cars conflicting with tram.

Thalmannplatz

At the time of this photo trailers were still in use. A motor+trailer set arrives at the Thalmannplatz Stop. The star-shaped Russian Red Army memorial is in the middle of the square, behind the tram.

Under the pre-2006 service arrangement a single trailer was operated between Rahnsdorf and the Thalmannplatz passing point only. At Thalmannplatz the trailer was swapped between two passing motor cars. In this photo the inbound single motor car passes the outbound train in order to position itself for a trailer takeover.

Inbound tram passes through the only junction on the line - a merge with the depot access track. The track layout at this intersection calls for trams to go through the junction and to switch from one side of Berliner Strasse to another in one move.

Schleusenstrasse / Blumenstrasse

The final section of the line follows Schleusenstrasse through Woltersdorf. Trams switch from one side of the street to another rather indiscreetly as many as 4 times.

The stub end Terminal at the eastern outer end of the line. Tracks end at the water locks at the canal, in the background. A vast foresty recreational area is located on the other side. Coupled with artificial water reservoirs, this is a popular destination with Berliners on short suburban leisure outings - a stable source of patronage for the tram line.
