The Fezzano Terminus
Turrinelli
The first trolleybus-like system in La Spezia was operated for 3 years between 1906-1909. It is considered a prototype of a modern trolleybus. The initial plan called for the 13 km. interurban line between La Spezia and Portovenere. However, only the section as far as Fezzano was built.

The overhead branching off to the viewer's left is used by trolleybuses serving the Line 1 to Canaletto and Bragarina. A trolleybus in this photo continues straight ahead as it follows the Line 3, which at the time of this photo was still operated with trolleybuses. The trolleybus is also destined to Canaletto, however, it will follow a more circuitous route via the Mugliarina neighborhood.

The trolleybus 801 serving the Line 1 bypasses the 803 that broke down earlier. At the time of this photo the Line 1 was operated on weekdays with 6 trolleybuses on the 12 minute headway (2 trolleybuses / 30 minutes in Saturdays; 1 vehicle / 60 minutes on Sundays).

Both the curbside southbound lane (on the right) and the curbside northbound lane (on the left) on Corso Chiodo are reserved for public transit vehicles only (and, apparently, bicycles). Other vehicles are allowed in the remaining middle lane in the northbound direction only.

The odd positioning of the bus stop shelter in the middle of the square is a leftover from the days when public transit operated through the neighboring Piazza Carvour and Via Del Carmine, in the background, to the viewer’s right. Upon Piazza Carvour being pedestrianalized, public transit was moved to the adjacent Via Antonio Gramsci, in the background, to the left. The shelter will be removed soon after this photo was taken.

The Chiappa Terminus
Bredabus 4001.12
At the time of this photo the Line 3 on weekdays was serviced on the 10 minute headway with 4 trolleybuses operating between Chiappa and Canaletto, and with 4 diesel buses operating between Chiappa and Ospedale (Hospital) Felettino. Thus, the Chiappa Terminus was served alternatively by both trolleybuses and diesel buses. Only the Ospedale Felettino branch was operated on Saturdays (4 diesel buses, 20 minutes) and on Sundays (1 diesel bus, 60 minutes).

A trolleybus serving the Line 3 loops around the Canaletto neighborhood, near the eastern terminus of the line. The branch of the Line 3 to Canaletto followed a somewhat circuitous routing and was rather determined by the trolleybus overhead design, than the modern day passenger flow. The branch will close soon after this photo was taken, meaning the end of a trolleybus service on the Line 3.

At the time of this photo the Line 3 on weekdays was serviced on the 10 minute headway with 4 trolleybuses operating between Chiappa and Canaletto, and with 4 diesel buses operating between Chiappa and Ospedale (Hospital) Felettino. Thus, the Canaletto terminus was served with trolleybuses only, operating on the 20 minute headway. There was no service on weekends. A non-revenue line to the Depot is branching of in the background, to the viewer’s left.

The service to this terminus will be reduced two-fold at around 2007, when alternate runs on the Line 1 started terminating at the newly built short-turn Palaspezia Loop. The full service to Bragarina will be reinstated again a few years thereafter.
