A well and reliably run trolleybus operation, arguably one of the best in Italy. Trolleybuses took over trams in 1950. A period of decline with gradual service cuts culminated in the mid-1970s with only two shuttle services left operating through the historic city center, with diesel buses operating all outer lines. By 1993 only one trolleybus line, number 7, remained in operation. Following a 5-year long system closure for a complete rehab 13.10.1995-13.05.2000, as well as new rolling stock acquisitions, the system received a new life.

A segment of the line on Via Emilia through the city center and Piazza Mazzini closes for traffic on Saturdays after 14:00 and all day on Sundays, during which hours alternative-route services 7A and 11A replace regular services 7 and 11. The Line 6 operates to Santi on weekdays only, and short-turns at Autostazione on weekends. Few select trips normally served with trolleybuses sometimes operate with diesel buses.

Light rail interurban line between Modena - Sassuolo, 19 km. long, operates since 01.04.1883; electrified sicne 1932; urban segment in the tunnel since 14.12.2003.
