San Remo, Via Roma

At the time of this photo trolleybus lines in San Remo were served with a mix of trolleybuses and diesel buses, with a preference given to the latter whenever possible. The urban Line U is hypothetically considered the primary trolleybus service, with most runs operated by trolleybuses. Nevertheless, bus substitutions were rampant.

A Ventimiglia-bound interurban trolleybus in the San Remo city center. Almost all modern trolleybus lines replicate the former tram lines’ routing. The city’s main thoroughfare, Via Roma, however, is an exception, as trams used to run on the neighboring Corso Giacomo Matteotti.

A tram approaches a stop in-front of the Main Railroad Station. Trams used to operate through the city center via Corso Giacomo Matteotti (straight ahead in this photo). A modern trolleybus line bears rightward, toward Via Roma. The Main Railroad Station building remains outside the frame, to the viewer’s right.

San Remo, Corso Giacomo Matteotti

The remains of the former one-way westbound trolleybus line on Corso Giacomo Matteotti. The line was removed in 2009 due to creation of a pedestrian area. This was a substitute line used whenever the main trolleybus line on Via Roma was closed for public events. Corso Giacomo Matteotti was also the site of the former tramway line through the city center. The former Main Railroad Station building is visible in the background, behind the palm trees.

A trolleybus in this photo is about to turn left, toward Via Roma. The photo is centered on the overhead point at the base of the former one-way westbound trolleybus line via Corso Giacomo Matteotti (straight ahead). The line will be removed in 2009 due to creation of a pedestrian area.

At the time of this photo the Line V was operated by a mix of trolleybuses and diesel buses with strong emphasis on the latter. This was due to a severe damage to the Ventimiglia substation by flooding in 2008, which limited operations on the line to 4-5 trolleybuses, with no more than 2 trolleybuses allowed within the Ventimiglia section at any given time. In reality, however, the Line V was operated with no more than 2 or 3 trolleybuses (out of 7 vehicles scheduled to operate on weekdays).

The pictured segment of Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi is the only spot in San Remo where the urban Line U deviates from the interurban lines’ routing. The interurban Line T operates via the neighboring Corso Orazio Raimondo. This low floor trolleybus is one of the four such vehicles acquired in 1988. Note that these were followed by the delivery of 14 high floor trolleybuses in 1991.

At the time of this photo the trolleybus line between San Remo and Taggia remained dormant for 6 years after being temporarily closed due to a succession of various road reconstruction projects. No more than a half of 15 trolleybuses were usually available for service on any given day at the time of this photo. This was due to a perpetual state of disrepair for many trolleybuses. Trolleybuses 1603 and 1705 (the two vehicles on the right) will never run again.
