Part 1

Here you will find a collection of pictures on Arkhangelsk, recent tram and trolleybus system maps, also depicting the track and wire networks, as well as maps identifying where pictures displayed were taken. All pictures are made on 14 June 2002, unless otherwise posted.

A detailed description of the tram and trolleybus network

Map with photo locations

01. It is now 5:56 in the morning. The very first tram of the day, RVZ-6M2 N 379 is making its way through the main Lenin Square and through the city center on a depot pull-out trip to serve northern routes in Solombala. The Solombala routes are separated from the rest of the network as per 15 May 2002.
04. It is 6:10 in the morning. N 379 is crossing the Kuznechevskiy Bridge. This bridge is in danger of closure for reconstruction due to structural weakness. Only depot pull-out and pull-in trips with 4 tramcars daily serving northern Solombala routes N3 and N4 are running over this bridge since 15 May 2002.
05. N 379 had just passed through here, and now N 381 is rolling off the bridge, followed by N 383 (at the top of the bridge). It is officially prohibited for trams to carry passengers over the bridge, but passengers are still picked up on depot trips. In fact, being under watch by my camera, this car has just completed the open-doors-wait-for-1-second-close-doors official ceremony at an unidentified stop at Taymirskaya ul. / ul. Valyavkina, even though there are no passengers in sight.
06. N 379 will be the sole car serving the world's northernmost tram route N3. It is run with one car at 48-minute headway daily from 6:22 to 19:10. Here N 379 awaits its departure at the southern terminal Krasnaya Kuznitsa, where Solombala routes N3 and N4 terminate together.
07. It is 6:23 in the morning. N 381 just left Krasnaya Kuznitsa on its first daily trip on route N4 toward Rayon Novih Pyatiletok. N4 will be run until 21:35 at strange headways 24+24+12 with 3 RVZ-6M2 tramcars N 381, 383 and 390. These three cars and N 379 on route N3 will be the only trams serving the entire Solombala network for today.
08. N 381 continues northward on Nikolskiy pr. The entire network of Solombala routes is single-track.
09. At Solombala center, Nikolskiy pr. / ul. Mayakovskogo. This is one of the passing points, however no head-on car to wait for, as N 381 is completing the very first trip of the day.
11. N 379 is coming back from its first run to Yuzhnaya Maymaksa, pictured here at Solombala dockyards. Double track briefly appears right before the now closed former tramway Depot N2, the unused track leading to the Depot could be seen branching off to the right.
12. The world's northernmost point reached by tram, the Lesozavod N21 (Lumber Mill N21) Terminal of Arkhangelsk route N3. This terminal is also known as ul. Baumana or Yuzhnaya Maymaksa.
13. Route N4 branches off toward the East. N 381 continues en route to Pervih Pyatiletok via this attractive segregated right-of-way alongside ul. Krasnih Partizan.
14. N 383 is on route N4 completing the second trip of the day. It stops at a gravel Sovhoznaya ul., the street leading to a nearby village that ended up within city limits. A few boards at the trackside mean "tram stops here".
15. N 381 is already coming back from Rayon Pervih Pyatiletok. This type of single track rural right-of-way is classic for Arkhangelsk tramways. The patch of white substance in the air in front of the car is produced at and flown over from a cellulose mill nearby.
17. A very tranquil scene of N 390 and N 383 meeting at this rural passing point near Mostovaya ul., lost in the early morning fog... which originates from the cellulose mill chimneys nearby. All the "fog" in the background is also made of toxic chemicals. The city and its massive developments of apartment blocks is just 0.5 kilometer to the right.
