Trolleybus traverses through a small section of the 'old Tyumen' that
boasts typical small-town semi-wooden buildings. At the height of
trolleybus operation the western section of the network was served with
Lines 1, 2, 4, 11 and 12 operating to/from Muzey, Dom Oborony and EMZ.
At the time of this photograph only Line 12 was left, operating to Dom
Oborony. The short Muzey extension in the 'old city' and the line to
EMZ in the western industrial park were no longer serviced.

A late eve run on Line 12 through the city center. The short section of
Respubliki Ul. in the 'old city' is the only chance to capture views
with more or less decent old stylish buildings as the backdrop. Such
chances are further reduced considering that Line 12 is the most
scarcely operated trolleybus service in the city. At the time of this
photo, while the peak hour headway hovered around 12 min, the off-peak
headway was up to 24 min if you get lucky. Provided that private diesel
buses operate the same corridor on the 1 min headway, trolleybus
service becomes essentially irrelevant.

Upon branching off the central Muzey line, the Dom Oborony extension
detours via a backwater neighborhood at the fringes of the city center.
A more direct route to Dom Oborony is available and used by most buses,
but despite long-standing plans to optimize the routing, the direct
trolleybus line was never built. Incidentally, as a result, this
particular neighborhood became the only area in the city almost
entirely dependent on the trolleybus service.

Trolleybus works its way down the circuitous Dom Oborony extension. A
mix of buildings in the background illustrates Tyumen's incoherent
urban planning.

3-06. Polevaya Ul. / Lunocharskogo Ul.

Inbound trolleybus leaves the direct corridor to the city center for a
detour via Polevaya Ul. and Perekopskaya Ul. The long-planned direct
trolleybus link would have continued to viewer's right via
Lunocharskogo Ul. and would connect directly into the short Muzey line
in the 'old city'. As of the date of this photo, provided the current
weak standing of trolleybuses in the city, this proposal could be
safely given a rest. Note Tyumen's signature wooden barracks in the
background.

Upon approaching Dom Oborony, the trolleybus line briefly splits in two
one-way sections. While inbound trolleybuses follow Lva Tolstogo Ul.
and Lunocharskogo Ul. (pictured here), outbound trolleybuses use
Polevaya Ul. and Yamskaya Ul.

Trolleybus approaches the Dom Oborony Loop. The overhead splits, as the
leftmost set of wires (viewer's point of view) continues on to EMZ,
while the rightmost set this trolleybus is about to follow leads to the
loop.

Laying over prior to a return inbound trip. The line to Dom Oborony was
opened in 1977, while the continuation to EMZ was finished in 1979. As
of the date of this photo, the remaining section to EMZ was not
operated, with trolleybuses serving Line 12 short-turning at Dom
Oborony. Trolleybuses will return to the EMZ line a year later, on 01
Feb 2008, but only as far as the Akkumulyatorniy Zavod Stop, about 2/3
down the line, where a new loop will be cut in.

3-10. The EMZ Loop.
A somewhat symbolic photo of the unused EMZ trolleybus loop with two
private diesel buses operating under the overhead in place of
trolleybuses. The section of the line between Dom Oborony and EMZ was
to serve the western industrial park. It was originally operated with
Lines 11 and 12. The service was reduced to Line 4 only in the 1990s,
and the section was eventually abandoned soon thereafter. With a shift
in economic priorities in present-day Russia, Soviet-era-built
industrial parks could no longer generate passenger patronage that
would justify trolleybus service. The trend has partially reversed,
however, as trolleybuses return to the EMZ line on 01 Feb 2008, even
though as far as the Akkumulyatorniy Zavod only, but nevertheless,
serving most of the industrial park in question.
