KTM-5M3 car 2. Eastbound.
Waiting for a meeting with a westbound tram. The schedule adherence is reasonable, thus waits at passing points, if any, generally are not exceeding 1-2 minutes. At the time when this photograph was taken, the passing point was just re-laid during the recent reconstruction of Popova Ul.

Passing the depot entrance. The Eastern Line via Popova Ul. was the very first tram line in the city. When initially opened on 15.01.1954, it originated at the depot. The terminal was officially known as 22-y Kvartal.

KTM-5M3 car 8 to the right. Eastbound.
This photograph is taken prior to the reconstruction of Popova Ul. The passing point was longer, and it was located farther east than the post-reconstruction version. The Eastern Line via Popova Ul. used to be a segregated right-of-way, laid amid lush greenery.

After the reconstruction the Eastern Line evolved into a mixed right-of-way. All greenery was gone.

The Eastern Line boasts some considerable sloping. Trams overtake grades at daring speeds.

Krasnutr'insk trams routinely maintain substantial speeds even when moving downhill.

The next car comes in 14 min. Here it poses in front of the imposing building belonging to the school.

1-04a. Popova Ul. / Molodezhnaya Ul.
KTM+KTP-1. Eastbound.
Consists of motor + trailer of this type were the first trams used on the system, they were also the only trains ever in use in the city. In this photo even though the trams are running already, the city around the tram line is still being built. Note the school under construction, the same building as in the photo above, shot 50 years later.

1-04b. Popova Ul. / Molodezhnaya Ul., the Molodezhnaya Ul. Stop.
KTM-5M3 car 1. Westbound.
Waiting for the tram in the middle of the street is a popular local behavior probably provoked by relative absence of autos.

1-05a. Popova Ul. between Leninskogo Komsomola Ul. and Karpinskogo Ul.
KTM-5M3 car 2. Eastbound.
The stops via the Eastern Line are rather spaced out. Also, at the time of this photograph the tracks appeared to be recently rehabbed. These factors provided for considerable speeds. The 'German' [as locals dubbed it] Church in the background serves the sizeable German minority population descending from involuntary migrants of the World War II.

KTM-5M3 car 4. Westbound.
The tram is passing the site of the initial settlement Tur'inskie Rudniki, the historic center of the city that ended up in the distant modern neighborhood. The Russian Orthodox Maxim Ispovednik Cathedral in the background, behind the 'German' Church, was rebuilt at its original site as the centerpiece of the historic center. The open field between churches is the site of the house where the inventor of radio Aleksandr Popov was born in 1859 [The Popov House Museum is now located in a similar house across the street].

The second passing point on the Eastern Line. During weekdays two trams serve this line at consecutive 14-28 min. intervals, thus the meet is scheduled here only on each second run. This time the tram will proceed without a delay. The passing point was shortened significantly during the reconstruction of Popova Ul., and now barely fits a single tram.

Spektr 71-402 car 5 to the right. Westbound.
This photo is taken shortly prior to the reconstruction. The passing point was much longer, and the line still ran on the reservation. Due to heavy reliance on electronics and troublesome maintenance, Spektr 71-402 trams are less ikely to be found in service than the older more reliable KTM-5M3 cars. This renders a shot containing two newer cars in service somewhat unique.

1-07. Popova Ul. / Furmanova Ul.
KTM-5M3 car 1. Westbound.
The reconstruction included almost an entire length of Popova Street, a remarkable project considering the size of the city. The tramway reservation, tramway poles and vegetation in the middle of the street, are all gone in favor of wall-to-wall asphalt and concrete urban scheme.

1-09. Popova Ul. / Klubnaya Ul.
KTM-5M3 car 2. Westbound.
Klubnaya Street is an unofficial borderline between the urban and the peripheral parts of the city. From this point on Popova Street turns into a one-way rural road.

KTM-5M3 car 2. Westbound.
Climbing out of the village, toward the city. The line goes as far down as the Tur'ya River, visible here at the end of the street. The river cuts the landscape in two, providing for impressive background with town's rural neighborhoods covering rolling hills.

Depending on the angle of the shot, it could seem that the tram line ends up in the middle of nowhere. The usual layover time at this terminal is 2 min.
