Map with photo locations

2-01. Downtown-bound train at the Cedar-Riverside Station. South of Metrodome the line runs on a heavily segregated and partially fenced-in right-of-way. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-02. Southbound 110 leaves the Cedar-Riverside Station and passes a loop leading to the depot. Downtown Minneapolis is in the background. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-03. Two-car train makes an irregular cross-over move as it pulls out of the depot at the beginning of the evening rush hour when headway on the line goes down from 10 minutes to 7.5 minutes. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-04. Two service trams meet near the depot between the Cedar-Riverside Station and the Franklin Ave Station. (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
2-05. Southbound train approaches the Franklin Ave Station with the southern gates of the depot and another loop visible in the background. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-06. The Franklin Ave Station offers unobstructed views of the downtown skyline. Southbound train in the station. (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
2-07. Another train approaches the Franklin Ave Station from the south. A giant 'LOOK' sign accompanied by all the appropriate bells and whistles safeguards a pedestrian crossing leading to the station. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-08. South of the Franklin Ave Stations the line follows a wide highway known as Hiawatha Ave on a heavily segregated and fenced-in right-of-way that parallels the roadway. Northbound train easily outruns cars caught in a traffic jam (behind trees). (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
2-09. Hiawatha Ave offers mostly semi-industrial scenery. Northbound train speeds between the Lake St / Midtown Station and the 38th St Station. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-10. More industrial views. Northbound car 110 just departed the 38th St Station. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-11. Southbound train at the 38th St Station. (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
2-12. All rail crossings between Metrodome and the 50th Street Station are gated. Car 109 approaches the 38th St Station. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-13. Downtown-bound train pictured just south of the 50th St / Minnehaha Park Station. Residential areas are protected from noise by ugly concrete barriers, at the same time trams are protected from people. Similar ugliness is also visible on the other side of Hiawatha Ave where trams don't run, thus the highway itself, not trams, is likely considered the source of noise. (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
2-14. A short stretch of Minnehaha Ave between E 52nd St and 54th St E prior to the VA Medical Center Station has a 'street-running' section of the line, the same as in downtown area. This arrangement does not mean mixed traffic operation, as no cars ever enter the right-of-way of the Hiawatha Line, except to cross tracks. Car 109 (the one closest to the viewer) in this photo is headed south. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-15. Southbound two-car train on Minnehaha Ave near 54th St E. The Snelling motel next to the line must be railfan's favorite. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-16. Southbound train runs on the impressive S-shaped tram-only viaduct between the VA Medical Center Station and the Fort Snelling Station over Highway 62. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-17. Southbound train on the same viaduct. (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
2-18. A scene of an interurban character in the Fort Snelling Station vicinity. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-19. Car 108 leaves the Fort Snelling Station for the Airport. (10-June-2005, YM)
2-20. Gated crossing north of the Fort Snelling Station. This was the southern terminal of the line between June 26 and December 4, 2004 upon completion of the first phase of the project. (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
2-21. An official recognition of unstable nature of tram service or official admission of management's insecurity? This sign at the bus stop next to the Fort Snelling Station reads: 'Board bus route 55 here (Operates during Light Rail service disruption)'. (10-June-2005, Stefan Mashkevich)
